At the beginning of a school year, each class democratically elects their School Councillors. All pupils have the opportunity to listen to the candidate speeches and then vote for 1 boy and 1 girl to represent their class in the School Council.
Every half term the School Councillors collect ideas from their class, and meet as a group to discuss issues and fundraising ideas. They also discuss what the activities should be for the end of term reward (Funzone). Before carrying out an idea, they check that the rest of the School Councillors agree.
School Councillors are always there to listen when pupils have a worry or problem about school. It is their job to be the 'voice' of those pupils in meetings so that issues can be resolved.
They also receive opportunities to take part in out of school activities and encourage others to do the same.
The School Council are a very important part of our school.
Last half term, the School Council met with Mr Ruse who is a sustainable schools consultant from Leeds City Council. He taught us about the different ways that we make our school more environmentally friendly. We learnt a lot about the impact of climate change and how small changes can make a big difference if we all work together in school to make it happen. We look forward to putting what we have learnt into action!
Our Year 5 and 6 School Councillors visited the Outer North West Youth Summit. This an event aimed at teaching children about democracy and how they can use their voice. Our pupils were lucky enough to meet several of our local councillors and visit the council chambers. They also had the opportunity to meet other children from across the city and collaborate with them in workshops where they could discuss important topics such as the environment and mental health! It was a brilliant day, enjoyed by us all.

This year, the very kind staff at the Sainsbury's Local store on Apperley Lane in Yeadon fundraised for our school and donated a very generous pot of money to us. Our School Councillors decided that they would like to spend it on updating our wet playtime games and each class voted on new games that they would like to purchase. On Friday 8th December, our Year 5 and 6 School Councillors had a shopping trip to Argos to buy the games and then distributed them to the different classes. It was a lot of fun and rather festive - the Christmas shoppers at Guiseley Retail Park were treated to some impromptu carol singing! We would like to say a huge thank you to the incredibly kind staff at Sainsbury's!
The School Council and Harmony Group members worked together to make this beautiful cascade of poppies to display in our school hall as part of our Remembrance Day commemorations. Each class also made a wreath decorated with poppies and messages of thanks to the armed services past and present.
Just like the delegates who were in Glasgow, we held our very own COP26 with the School Councillors and Harmony Group representatives to discuss and debate ideas about climate change. Each table was given a climate problem to discuss and offer solutions to. All the delegates were brilliant at coming up with ways to help save the environment; from 'tree licenses' to laws against using palm oil! We then made our own personal pledges to help the environment. Lots of the delegates said that they would use less electricity by not charging up devices as much and use less plastic by re-using plastic bags and creating crafts out of used plastic. They were all brilliant!
